INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON

'Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture'

December 17-18, 2009, Ahmedabad, India

RESOLUTIONS

Resolution 1: Long term Observations

The Workshop

Noting

  • The advancement made in space technology sensors, platforms and related infrastructure and maturing of earth observation systems

Recognizing

  • The need to have spatially consistent measurement of land, atmosphere and ocean parameters at high spatial density and temporal interval

Recommends

  • Space agencies to institutionalize systems for long term remote sensing observations and retrieval of land, atmosphere and ocean parameters for climate change studies.
  • Archival and distribution of such consistent data products over web for easy availability and use by researchers, students and policy makers.

Resolution 2: Monitoring Green House Gases

The Workshop

Noting

  • The feasibility of measuring and monitoring of aerosols and greenhouse gases contributing to radiative forcing and climate change

Recognizing

  • The need to operationally measure and monitor spatio-temporal distribution of green house gases for targeting sources and sinks of these agents leading to formulation of suitable adaptation and mitigation plans

Recommends

  • Defining, designing and develop hyperfine spectral resolution spectrometers for operational monitoring and measurement of these agents from space platforms.

Resolution 3: Database of Climate Drivers

The Workshop

Noting

  • The scattered efforts made in generating thematic databases of land use, croplands, cropping system etc. and their use in climate change studies

Recognizing

  • The importance of such databases in climate change impact, adaptation and mitigation strategies

Recommends

  • Concerted research efforts to be undertaken in generating validated global / national scale spatial databases of climate drivers by assimilating existing remote sensing, ground observations and model outputs at appropriate scales

Resolution 4: Climate Change Impact Assessment

The Workshop

Noting

  • The diversity of results of various studies on impact of climate change on agricultural production presented during the workshop

Recognizing

  • The need to have consistent impact analysis for devising appropriate policy options

Recommends

  • Devising framework / benchmarks of set of input data, models, methodology and climate scenarios for generating consistent impact analysis and risk assessment due to climate change and variability.

Resolution 5: Parameter Assimilation in Regional Climate Models

The Workshop

Noting

  • The results shown by individual research studies scattered across disciplines, intuitions and organisations showing improvements made in regional climate model predictions by assimilation of remote sensing based observations

Recognising

  • The need for understanding the bio-geo chemical processes in the scenario of global change and
  • The requirement of many land surface state and processes parameters in climate change studies

Recommends

  • Developing international programme on studying various aspects (assimilation, inversion, calibration, validation) of integration of bio-geo-physical products in regional climate models to generate improved climate change scenarios at better spatial resolutions.

Resolution 6: Adaptation & Mitigation Measures

The Workshop

Noting

  • The advancements made, better availability of trained manpower and high penetration of geo-informatics technologies across sectors world over

Recognizing

  • The need to undertake multi-sectoral climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in right earnest at the earliest

Recommends

  • Taking enhanced efforts towards integration of geospatial algorithms, tools and techniques for suggesting region specific appropriate adaptation and mitigation.

Resolution 7: Capacity Building

The Workshop

Noting

  • The complexity and variability in data type, models and implementation scales in climate change studies

Recognizing

  • The challenge of developing requisite expertise for integrated assessment

Recommends

  • Institutionalisation of capacity building programmes to strengthen the research, teaching and training activities in the field of impact, adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
